Why Choose Me? There are 3 types of firm which provide tax investigation specialist services: LARGE ACCOUNTANCY PRACTICES “Big 4” accountancy firms and even so-called “second tier” firms undoubtedly have genuine specialist tax investigation specialists within their practices and will do a good job. I should know, I have been a Tax Investigations Partner in one large firm and a Tax Investigations Director in another. But with Big 4 charge out rates of anything up to £850 per hour, they are very expensive. Second tier firms generally have lower rates than the Big 4, but they are still two or three times what I will charge you. With the big firms, you should ask them - will the impressive person who sold the service to you be the one to do the work? LOCAL ACCOUNTANCY FIRMS They will certainly be less expensive than the large accountancy practices but will they have a genuine tax investigation specialism? If they have ex-HMRC staff on their payroll, what qualifications did they achieve in HMRC? Did they take, and pass, HMRC’s “Final Training”? And just how senior were they in HMRC? In fact, most of the clients I have acted for have been referred to me by local accountancy firms who have recognised the need to bring in a specialist in this difficult and stressful area. TAX INVESTIGATION SPECIALISTS Like me! I am not the only one, of course, and such firms will tend to have people like me who are not only ex H M Inspectors of Taxes but probably will also have had experience in a large accountancy firm. The advantages of such specialist outfits is that they will probably have the experience and qualifications of the large firms but at a fraction of the price. Also, you tend to get the impressive person you first met as opposed to being passed on to a more junior member of staff. As I say, I am not the only one and if you would rather have a firm based in the North, rather than me based in the South, you could do a lot worse than look at Gilbert Tax, based in Yorkshire.
